Wat lead to 2pac's death? The East Coast, West Coast rivalry within hip hop started in 1995 when Tupac accused former friend, Biggie Smalls, Sean "Puffy" Combs and other East Coast figures of having him set up to be shot. We must rewind back to November 1994. Tupac was under a lot of stress because he had some serious court cases at the time. On November 30th, he was going to a Manhattan recording studio with his sister's boyfriend, his manager and his friend Stretch. He was going to record a song knowing it may be his last recording for a long time because of the court cases. Tupac entered the building with the other 3 men that were with him and as he was about to enter the elevator, he and the others were forced to the ground by armed men. They demanded Tupac's jewels. Tupac resisted and tried to grab his guns but he got shot 5 times. The gunmen got away with over $40,000 worth of Tupac's jewelry. Tupac was seriously wounded but he made it upstairs to were Biggie, Puffy and others where. He crawled into the room and according to Tupac everyone looked at him like he was a ghost. Tupac stripped naked, smoked a joint and called his mother, who called 911. When the police got there, one of the cops who Tupac had trouble with before noticed that Tupac's testicles were bleeding and said, "Hey Tupac, How's it hangin'?" Tupac was brought to hospital were he underwent surgery. Many said it was a miricle that he survived. A few hours after he underwent surgery, Tupac checked himself out of the hospital fearing that his life was in danger. The next day Tupac arrived in court were he was sentenced to up to 4 1/2 years in prison. Not long after, Tupac was sent to Rikers Island Penitentiary. While he was in jail people were telling him that Biggie's homeboy shot him. Tupac thought a lot about the shooting and worked it out that he was set up by Biggie and Puffy. Biggie and Puffy denied this but Tupac was convinced. When Tupac came out of jail he started to throw up the "W" which meant Westside. He spoke and rapped a lot about how he was set up and dissed a lot of east coast rappers. He frequently dissed Mobb Deep because while Tupac was in jail Mobb Deep said in a song, "Thug Life, we still livin' it." Tupac took this as a diss. Other rappers like Chino XL, Nas, Jay Z, LL Cool J and more were getting invloved and dissing Tupac. Tupac retaliated with hard hitting disses which really fueled the west coast, east coast beef. But the main people in the whole thing were Tupac and Biggie. Tupac said he felt real bad because his so-called friends turned on him. He even said that Stretch knew about the set up and didn't warn him. Tupac was saying that Biggie used to sleep on his couch and Tupac would beg women to have sex with Biggie. He also said that he would let Biggie come on stage at his shows and down his own lil' show when nobody knew Biggie. Biggie saw things differently though. In an interview after Tupac died Biggie said that Tupac knew who shot him because he said so on a song on the Makaveli album. Biggie said that Tupac accused him so 'Pac could make more money. If he rapped about the person who really shot him, nobody would care and he wouldn't sell as much records. Biggie said that the whole thing was a misunderstanding and it was unfortunate that it got out of hand. Both of the rappers knew however, that at the end of the day it was about money. Whoever had the best record was winning the war basically. The beef was between Tupac and Biggie but too many people got involved and blew the thing out of proportion. Tupac did talk a lot about it though and really got into it, but he didn't mean for it to be like a war, it was just a little hip hop beef, instead all of New York was like, "Fuck Tupac." And L.A. was like, "Fuck Biggie." Today there is very little beef between both coasts. Most people shut up about it after Tupac and Biggie died.
